Abstract
Post-surgical rehabilitation in cosmetic surgery demands professionals with up-to-date skills in technological procedures, therapeutic decisionmaking, and ethical conduct. However, limitations persist in the specialized training of rehabilitation specialists for post-abdominal liposuction recovery. The objective of this article is to characterize the initial state of perceived professional performance of rehabilitation specialists in post-abdominal liposuction recovery at two hospitals in Havana, Cuba. A descriptive, observational, and longitudinal study with a mixed-methods approach was conducted between January 2024 and June 2025, involving 34 rehabilitation specialists and 8 healthcare managers from the Cmdte. Manuel Fajardo University Clinical-Surgical Hospital and the Cira García Central Clinic. The variable of perceived professional performance was evaluated based on three dimensions (clinical, cognitive, and behavioral) using a survey, semi-structured interviews, and methodological triangulation. Rehabilitation professionals reported a high level of proficiency in traditional procedures (97 %), primarily therapeutic ultrasound and laser therapy. However, gaps were identified in the use of emerging technologies, therapeutic decision-making, and specialized training. The cognitive dimension presented the greatest limitations, while the behavioral dimension showed strengths in ethical responsibility and patient relations. It is concluded that the perceived professional performance demonstrates potential in the basic execution of procedures and in ethical-humanistic behavior, but limitations in the incorporation of advanced technologies and in professional development, which justifies the implementation of specialized continuing education programs.
