Environmental management and sustainable development are two fundamental concepts today, which have become essential pillars to address environmental challenges and promote an equitable and healthy future for coming generations. Environmental management refers to the set of practices, policies, and strategies aimed at responsibly managing natural resources and minimizing the negative impact of human activities on the environment. It is within this relationship, striving to build a better world, that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can take the lead, as they are spaces for specialized training in various fields of knowledge. The study aimed to analyze the contribution that environmental management can make toward fostering sustainable development in Higher Education Institutions in El Salvador. To achieve this, an interview guide was applied to representatives of rectors, faculty members, and directors of research and social outreach from accredited HEIs throughout the country. Among the research findings, it was discovered that actions are indeed being taken toward the rational use of resources, such as energy, paper, and water savings. Additionally, environmental topics are being incorporated as a transversal axis in various courses and research and outreach projects. It is necessary for HEIs to increase their efforts to encourage the participation of the university community in environmental actions. Recommendations to strengthen current efforts include seeking international partnerships and creating a green fund to support the implementation of environmental management policies.Downloads
